Sustainability

Off-site construction is the key to sustainable building

Studies have shown that our modular method of construction offers considerable whole-life value benefits. Here’s how we offer sustainable solutions at every stage of the design and build process:

Designing buildings

  • Our ‘Design for Manufacture’ philosophy maximises the benefits of off-site production, assembling buildings in highly efficient, factory-controlled conditions
  • Our integrated approach to design uses state-of-the-art building simulation software allowing us to value engineer carbon-efficient and project-specific modular buildings
  • The latest low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies can easily be accommodated into our buildings, helping to reduce carbon emissions over the life of your building
  • We use intelligent design to engineer waste-generating operations out of the manufacturing process – minimising waste at the factory and on site

Manufacturing buildings

  • Our buildings are manufactured in a quality controlled factory equipped with the latest production technology to ensure consistently high quality buildings, which reduces the need for later rectification
  • Labour efficiency is greater in a factory environment than on building sites that use temporary labour and are subject to inclement weather
  • Our manufacturing process is energy efficient, with minimal use of hot and mechanised processes. The insulation material used in the wall and roof panels contains no HCFCs, and has an ozone-depleting potential of zero to help protect the environment
  • We are committed to using materials from certified sustainable and managed sources
  • We recycle materials wherever possible – 73% of waste generated in the off-site manufacturing process is recycled
  • 94% of the materials used to manufacture our buildings is recycled
  • Up to 67% less energy is required to produce a modular building than a traditionally built one.¹

Siting buildings

  • Our own site teams reduce the reliance on temporary site labour, which further improves quality
  • Up to 90% fewer vehicle movements are required than on a traditional site-based construction project, reducing congestion and carbon emissions²
  • There is significantly reduced waste on site. Around 13% of materials delivered to traditional construction sites are never used and go straight into the waste stream. Research carried out by WRAP has shown that off-site construction generates up to 80% less waste than site-based building methods

Managing and maintaining buildings

  • The use of pre-finished materials wherever possible reduces on-site maintenance
  • Our steel-framed building systems achieve a higher degree of precision, minimising air leakage and delivering improved thermal efficiency, lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions

Ultima energy efficient building

With modular construction you can meet all your sustainability targets – and save time, money and energy

Sustainability is now a primary consideration for all new construction projects. The Government has set tough targets for carbon reductions in buildings, and the construction industry needs to take radical steps to cut the environmental impact of its processes and end products.

Cutting your carbon emissions could be as simple as calling Ultima Building Systems

Drastically cutting carbon emissions in the construction sector will require innovative thinking and a fresh approach to the way we traditionally build. That's precisely what the Ultima Building System offers, with its uniquely sustainable method of off-site construction, producing high-specification buildings that are energy efficient and offer long-term flexibility for future change.
